Electrical Power Tools Safety

Electricity typically travels in a carefully directed closed-system. Electrical shock can occur when the body becomes part of this system, or creates a new system path. The actual damage from shock is from current flow (amperes). As little as 50 milliamperes (or 1/20th of an ampere) can cause electrocution. The danger is multiplied by the amount of time (duration) that the shock is applied through the body. A lower voltage of say, a 120 volt household current can cause severe shock or death in as little as 3 or 4 seconds duration. Higher voltages at less duration can cause the same amount of current flow and damage

Shock normally occurs in one of three methods:

Touching both wires of an electrical circuit.

Touching one (hot) wire of an electrical circuit and the ground.

Touching a metallic part that has become energized and the ground.

The last method can be the least-expected type of shock related injury. If the insulation of the electrical parts or wiring inside a tool becomes deteriorated or damaged, electricity can be allowed to flow along the metal parts and body of the tool. This is why "grounding" is so important.

Electrical circuits from utilities have one or more "hot" conductors which have electrical energy, and a neutral or "grounded" conductor. This grounded conductor is the normal path electricity takes back to the utility. If this pathway is interrupted by a person, current can then flow through the person, causing shock. To help prevent this, electrical circuits have an equipment ground, or "grounding" conductor. This is a second, redundant ground path (to be used in cases of equipment defects) which is bonded electrically to the non-current-carrying metal parts of a tool.

By having all metallic parts of tools bonded to a grounding conductor, this conductor- and not the worker can safely carry away any electrical current in the case of a tool's malfunction. When a tool is properly grounded, current through the body is either eliminated, or greatly reduced. This is why OSHA requires either the use of GFCI receptacles, or all tools and extension cords periodically checked for ground continuity.

The GFCI receptacle is especially useful since it will (even without a good ground) sense more amperes flowing out from the power source than back from the tool. Any imbalance greater than 5 millamperes (significantly less than a shock hazard) will cause the receptacle to shut off- usually within 1/40th of a second. If a GFCI receptacle shuts off, the worker can then find the cause of the electrical problem.

Because of the hazards associated with electrical powered tools, care must be taken to examine daily the visible condition of tool and extension cords, especially the cord ends for any damage or defects. Tools should be checked out when returned to the shop before reissuing back out to the workplace.

OSHA has five overall recommendations for electrical tools safety.

Maintain tools in good condition.

Use the correct tool for the job.

Examine each tool for damage before use.

Operate tools according to manufacturer's instructions.

Use adequate personal protective equipment.

How Far Are We From Kitty?

I have always been fascinated by the story of Kitty Genovese. Her story takes place in New York. Kitty was a 28-year old female from an Italian-American family. She was a bar manager at a small neighborhood in Queens. Most nights she worked late. On the frigid morning of March 13, 1964 around 3:15 a.m., as Kitty was approaching her apartment a man approached her. Kitty ran, but the man, Winston Moseley, caught her and stabbed her twice in the back.

Kitty screamed loudly, "He stabbed me! Help me!". The scream was heard by her neighbors. Accounts of that night suggest that a neighbor shouted at the perpetrator, "leave her alone". What we know is that Moseley entered his car and left the scene, while Kitty tried to reach her apartment. Her wounds impeded her from getting to safety. Ten minutes later, the attacker returned covering his face with a hat to finish what he had started. He viciously searched for her and once he found her, he continued his assault. Moseley stabbed her multiple times for more than 20 minutes. The attacker took $49 dollars and Kitty's life.

The police was called minutes after the attack. After detectives investigated the scene, they collected 38 eye-witness testimonies. But this is what makes this case special, NONE of them called the police during the attack. Why?

SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

This incident prompted many social psychologists (see Darley and Latané) to study the reason for this type of apathy. The findings suggested two reasons why people did not act, diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect.

Diffusion of Responsibility is the tolerance of situations due to being a member of a larger group, in contrast to not tolerating it if they were alone. For example, people doing unethical acts because someone else told them to. This has happened multiple time in wars, corporations or cults.

Bystander effect is the inability to react to an emergency when other people are present. In other words, how many times have you seen a car on the shoulder of a highway and not stop because you believe someone else will call for help, or that help is on the way.

WHERE ARE WE NOW?
Now, let's get back to the present. We would like to believe those types of incidents are a thing of the past and would not happen now. Wrong. As early as last month, we witness the same type of apathy in Philadelphia. On September 8th, 2008 a 20 year-old man returning from work via the subway, was attacked by a man with a hammer. The attacker, who was with a 5 year-old child, pulled a hammer and started hitting the victim over the head for no apparent reason.

The attack spilled over to a station plaza where it finally stopped. The mass transportation cameras recorded the incident (Type "Philadelphia Hammer Attack" on a search engine to see the video). As it was with Kitty, this incident was witnessed by multiple individuals riding the same subway car. None of the 10 passengers acted to help the young man or called the police to report the incident.

There are multiple recorded incidents demonstrating the same type of inaction by people. What I find sad is that if someone has acted, these crimes could have been prevented. I'm not advocating putting yourself in harm's way, but we to renounce to the mentality of "I and no one else". We will never be better than those 38 witnesses if we act as spectators to the tragedies of others. Remember, we all could have been Kitty. My question is "How far are we from Kitty?"

Adding a New Receptacle in an Existing Home

In todays world of electrical/electronic miracles more and more receptacles are needed all the time. Sometimes this can be a real chore. Often you can go through a wall and connect to an existing outlet.

The tools required for this project are a thin blade screwdriver, needle nose pliers, wire strippers, razor knife or sheet rock saw.

If you have an existing outlet on the other side of the wall, you can do this quit easily. First make sure the power is off at the existing outlet. Remove the cover and the receptacle screws. Gently pull the receptacle out of the box. Next take a thin blade screw drive and push on the edge of the box until it goes out the other side of the wall. This will show you where the stud is on the other side.

Measure the box and mark the wall. Use a sheet rock saw or razor knife to cut the opening out. remove the plugs so you can run the romex wire from the existing box to the new box. With the wire inside of the new box, push the box in place and screw it to the stud. Strip the romex about 4 inches and strip the black and white wires about 1/2 inch and connect the to the new receptacle. black on gold screw,white on silver screw and bare ground on the green screw. Install the receptacle and mount the cover. Go to existing receptacle and repeat the connection the same as the new receptacle. reinstall the receptacle and cover and turn the power on-you are done!

I Shaved My Legs For This

I've never liked to go for a doctor's visit. I'm always nervous and I always over dress. I feel like I am going to be on display. I worry about everything from having bad breath to ' is the skin on my elbows too rough'. I'm just not an up close and personal type of woman. I don't like to be poked and prodded even if that is what I pay them for. And I hate the waiting. However I do go for my regular check ups.

But after my last visit, it may be my last visit.

Allow me to elaborate on my not so pleasant experience at my doctor's office the other day...

After a very short wait in the main waiting room they called my name and then put me in a white room with a chair, a cabinet with a small sink, a rolling stool and an exam table. Now this sounds pretty normal so far doesn't it? I thought so too.

The next logical step would have been that after a wait of no less than twenty minutes, the doctor would come through the door with my chart in hand.

He didn't. Thirty minutes crawled by and still no one came. Each time I heard a voice outside my door I would cough or clear my throat really loud..in case they had forgotten me...but still no one came. Forty minutes elapsed. I could feel the hair on my legs starting to grow back. I just knew that I was going to sweat, even though the thermostat was set to ten below zero. Was my mascara smudged? Did I have lipstick on my teeth? I pulled up my shirt just to make sure I had worn my good bra. I looked down at my toes peeking out from my sandals. 'Ohhhhh! my toes are turning blue. I need to see a doctor,' I thought. Then I remembered that I had used some of my granddaughter's nail polish. Funny, it had looked pink last night though.

Finally after an hour of this unmitigated torture, I marched to the door and opened it a crack and stuck my head out. "May I please go to the bathroom?" I squeaked to the lady sitting at the desk nearby.

And, sure enough, she was wrong. I returned from the bathroom and sat down to wait some more. I counted the cotton balls in the jar on the table. I rearranged the tongue depressors in the cup. I took out all the rubber gloves and refolded them and returned them to the box. I memorized the emergency fire exit map on the wall. I memorized the eye chart. ( I can now pass an eye exam from way across the street, if the need should ever arise.)

I read the notice taped to the door. Do Not Sit Or Play On Rolling Stool! Hmmm. Defiantly I sat down on it. That felt good. So I sat on it again, rolled myself across the room and then spun it round and round and round. It made me get dizzy and sick to my stomach. Guess that's why they said don't do that!

Now I don't claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but even I know this is not your normal waiting time in a doctor's office.

I was becoming more and more agitated by the minute. I climbed up onto the exam table and mussed the pillow and wrinkled the paper sheet. I paced the floor. I chewed a whole pack of gum. I made a game of seeing how many pieces I could get into my mouth at one time. I looked at the clock again. I had been in this windowless, five by seven room for exactly one hour and forty seven minutes. Broken and exhausted, I finally sank back into my chair, wound my hands in my hair and began to rock back and forth humming to myself, "Noooo--boddddy knooows the tru--ble I see..."

The door opened and the doctor came in, looking around the room in an odd way. "I am so sorry you had to wait so long," he apologized.

"Oh that's quite alright, it wasn't a problem." I lied through my teeth, hoping he wouldn't notice the claw marks on the inside of the door. (boy, I can be so phony sometimes all in the name of good manners)

After he checked my vitals, banged me on my knee with the hammer, stuck the ice-cold stethoscope to my back, he wrote something in my chart. Then he informed me that I needed a B12 shot. "And maybe something for that cough," he added. "Wait here and I'll be right back" he said heading toward the door.

This was more than I could bear. I flung myself to the floor, latched onto his ankle with a death grip and began to sob. "Don't leave me in here again. I can't take this room anymore I screamed as he walked down the hall, dragging me behind him, attached like a third limb to his ankle. He looked at his nurse and shook his head. He whispered something to her, then handed her my chart.

'"Where would you prefer the shot, Dear? in the arm or hip?" the nurse asked.

"Right here in the hall," I said.

I didn't care if she stuck it in my eye...so long as I didn't have to go back into That Room! Ever Again!

Electrical Repairs - Installing a New Electrical Outlet

The electrical wiring of your home is can be extremely dangerous if not done properly or by a person who is not a licensed electrician. Electricians are qualified to make proper repairs to wiring and are able to safely install new light fixtures or electrical outlets. Not hiring an experienced electrician could result in damage to your wiring or a devastating fire, and this goes for even the seemingly simple procedures such as installing a new electrical outlet. When installing a new outlet, you must take all the necessary steps to ensure your safety.

The most obvious and important is to shut off the power at the breaker because an electric shock can kill you. Never perform any maintenance on a hot wire. There are also voltage testers available that you can place on a wire and it will let you know if electricity is running through it. These are available at any hardware store, and are recommended if you are doing any electrical work. You also will want to take into account the tools you are using and if you have a nearby gas line, as to not produce a spark that can ignite the gas. If you are replacing an older outlet, you may notice that it only has two wires, and does not have a grounded wire. To replace old outlets, you'll need to make sure it is grounded. You can use the metal outlet box as a place to attach the ground wire if it is connected to a grounded conduit.

Make sure it is not just attached to the wood, because this will mean the conduit is not grounded and can be extremely unsafe. Be sure to check with your local electrical codes. There are certain specifications for electrical outlets, especially in kitchens where microwaves and other major appliances are plugged. Outlets will need to meet or exceed your local electrical codes to ensure the safety of your home and family. Although it may seem easy to attach a few wires and flip a switch, it is imperative that the procedure is done properly to avoid danger.

Something as simple as installing an outlet box to the wall stud can be done improperly, causing the outlet to be uneven or at the incorrect depth. Make sure the box is level and fits nicely against the stud. You can use either nails or screws, but make sure the box is not tilted to give off a professional appearance. If you have colored wires, remember that red wires connect to red wires, white connect to white, and black to black. The green wire is the ground wire - make sure it attached to a grounded piece of metal. If you only have one color of wire, you'll need to check and make sure you connect the proper wires together.

Once the outlet is screwed into the box and the cover is over the outlet, you can turn the power on to check it. If it doesn't trip the breaker, you can connect an electrical appliance or device to it and see how it works. If you have no experience with electrical wiring, you should hire an electrician. They can do the job quickly, safely and properly - giving you peace of mind that your house will not be damaged by electrical fire.

New to Camping - Equipment Checklist

Anytime you're heading for an outdoor adventure it's vital to have everything you need. Even if you're just going to the beach for the afternoon, it's important to pack the essentials. Think about the time you went outside for the afternoon and forgot sunscreen... we've all been there and we've all regretted it.

So to ensure you don't have these "Oh Poo" moments of forgetting important camping equipment and gear I have put together the basics that you must include!

Of course depending on the location, harshness of elements and length of the trip will determine the full load that you will have.

Tent site:

Tent: Several options here: family tents, single tents, 2-person tents, even tents for truck beds to give you the best tent site for your camping party.
Tent setup tools: Axe (leatherman), hammer, mini survival shovel, extra stakes, dust pan/brush/
Sleeping Bags: Type of camping sleeping bag will depend on the weather and temperatures you'll be getting your zzzz's in. Sleeping bags are made at different levels for different degrees and warmth quality. Down sleeping bags, double sleeping bags, and of course standard bags are just a few options.

Auto Emergency Tool - A Help in Accidents, Carjacking Or Breakdowns - Four Ways To Use It

It is four things, a Flashlight, an Emergency Flasher, a Hammer and a Seat Belt Cutter. describes this Car Emergency Tool. May I suggest ways you may use this Super Tool every Automobile should have, as well as a small tool kit that has basic tools and battery jumper cables.

Having a Flashlight is Self explanatory

The need for additional light inside a vehicle and outside both in Nighttime and Daytime. If you need to find something that has rolled under the seat. Use it look under the dashboard or in places the interior lights are not bright enough. Use it outside if you need to check the vehicles tires, motor operation and fluid levels, flat tires, street problems and people problems.

An Emergency Flasher to Signal for Help

Police Officers or other traffic will realize that you have a problem with an accident or stalled automobile. This is especially helpful if your problem is not in a normal range of view by a passing motorist. If you need to walk along the roadway to secure help it would warn traffic on the road of your existence along the roadway long before they get close to you giving them time to react.

A Hammer to Break a Window to Escape

If you are in an accident and cannot open a door, break a window.. Some accidents may end up with the vehicle in the water or snow which may require window breakage to escape. I have known the case of an Automobiles Battery not functioning because of corrosion around the battery poles and the cables. A few taps with the hammer sometimes would make sufficient contact, to get the car started, and get to a place where good cleaning can be obtained. An insurance policy will repair you and the car after the fact. This may save your life.

Seat Belt Cutter to Free Yourself or Others

An accident can damage the seatbelt clasps where they will not release. Also if the Automobile ends up in a position where you are weighing down on the belt it would be difficult if not impossible to release. Seat Belts are difficult to cut without a sharp tool. You might even use it if you get stuck when the clasps malfunction in normal operation for you or your family. Try to keep it close to the driver's seat.

The Hammer or the Light may Help your Self Defense

Depending on the circumstances all four of the tools might be used to fight off a carjacker who is trying to take your vehicle. There are other self defense tools you could have to do this better but if they were not available you could utilize this tool. The horn is also a way to discourage them as noise and light are the enemies of assailants.
